Frequently asked questions
How many bank holidays are there in 2027?
England and Wales have 8 bank holidays in 2027, Scotland has 9 and Northern Ireland has 10. In 2026 the totals are 8, 10 and 10.
What happens when a bank holiday falls on a weekend?
A ‘substitute’ weekday becomes the bank holiday instead, normally the following Monday. When Christmas Day and Boxing Day both fall at a weekend, the substitute days are the following Monday and Tuesday.
Do I get paid for bank holidays?
Not automatically. Employers do not have to give paid leave on bank or public holidays. Most full-time workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks’ paid holiday a year (28 days for a five-day week), and an employer can count bank holidays as part of that. Check your contract.
Why are bank holidays different in Scotland and Northern Ireland?
Each nation sets its own. Scotland has 2 January and St Andrew’s Day but not Easter Monday, and its Summer bank holiday is at the start of August. Northern Ireland adds St Patrick’s Day (17 March) and the Battle of the Boyne (12 July).
When is Easter 2027?
Easter Monday 2027 is Monday 29 March 2027, and Good Friday is three days earlier. See Easter dates for every year.
